Japan Zoo Map

Capybaras in an open-air hot spring, hundreds of foxes loose in the snow, lions a car window away. Japan's zoos are far stranger than the word suggests. Ranked, and each one placed on the map.

HokkaidoAsahiyama ZooJapan's northernmost zoo, renowned nationwide for revolutionizing how visitors observe wildlife.Pioneer of "behavioral exhibits," this facility designs enclosures around animals' natural instincts. Watch spotted seals dart through vertical cylindrical tanks, see hippopotamuses gracefully swimming underwater, and marvel at orangutans crossing high-wire ropes strung directly above the walking paths.Once facing the threat of closure in the 1990s, passionate zookeepers completely transformed the park into a national phenomenon. Their dedication is visible today through charming, hand-drawn educational signs detailing animal quirks. If you visit between late December and March, time your trip to witness the wildly popular "Penguin Walk." Originally started to help the birds lose weight, it now allows you to see King Penguins waddling right past your feet on the snow. During feeding sessions, known locally as "Mogumogu Time," staff provide engaging live commentary while beasts show off their hunting reflexes. Summer visitors should look out for the limited "Night Zoo" event in mid-August, offering a rare glimpse of nocturnal habits. To beat the crowds, arrive right at opening time and head straight to the popular Polar Bear Pavilion first, then work your way backwards through the grounds.View on Traveldoko
WakayamaAdventure WorldJapan's premier panda sanctuary, home to the largest family of giant pandas in the country. This expansive hybrid park features a safari world where animals roam freely and a marine section with high-energy dolphin performances. Beyond the exhibits, it operates as a full amusement park with rides, prioritizing a "Smile" philosophy that encourages close-up animal encounters and interactive feeding experiences.Unlike Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo where viewing time is often restricted, Adventure World offers a more relaxed environment to observe its famous panda residents, part of the world-renowned "Eimei" breeding lineage. In the Kenya Safari zone, while the provided train is convenient, the best-kept secret is exploring on foot or by rented bicycle; this allows you to set your own pace and see animals without glass barriers. For a unique perspective, the "Backyard Tour" offers a rare look at the marine life care facilities. If visiting during peak summer, look for the special night sessions where the park stays open late for illuminated shows and a glimpse into the nocturnal habits of lions and tigers. Strategically located just minutes from Nanki-Shirahama Airport, it is an easy add-on to a coastal Wakayama itinerary. To avoid disappointment, pre-book popular feeding slots online for elephants or giraffes, as these sell out almost immediately upon park opening. The gift shop is also a destination in itself, featuring exclusive panda merchandise you won't find anywhere else in Japan.View on Traveldoko
TokyoUeno ZooJapan's oldest zoo, established in 1882 as a pioneering wildlife park in Tokyo.Renowned for its beloved giant pandas, this sprawling sanctuary houses thousands of animals spanning hundreds of diverse species. Divided into East and West gardens, the expansive grounds offer visitors a rare chance to observe global wildlife ranging from polar bears to elephants right in the city center. While most visitors stick to the main paths, the grounds hold surprising cultural treasures, including a stunning 17th-century five-storied pagoda and a historic tea ceremony house seamlessly integrated into the animal habitats. To escape the heaviest crowds, enter through the lesser-known Ikenohata Gate instead of the busy main entrance. The West Garden borders the expansive Shinobazu Pond, a vital habitat for free-flying wild birds, cormorants, and native turtles, which transforms into a breathtaking sea of green lotus leaves during summer. Here, the "Gorilla Woods" and "Tiger Forest" exhibits stand out for their immersive, naturalistic enclosures that allow you to observe these magnificent creatures up close. For a truly memorable experience, combine your visit with a morning walk through the surrounding park area, especially during the spring cherry blossom season or autumn foliage peak. Plan to arrive right at opening time to catch the animals at their most active before the midday heat and afternoon crowds set in.View on Traveldoko
KanagawaZoorasiaOne of Japan's largest zoos, famous for its naturalistic habitats and rare okapis.Unlike traditional concrete-heavy zoos, this sprawling park organizes animals by climate zones. Visitors traverse the globe from the Asian Tropical Forest to the African Savanna. Enclosures prioritize animal welfare, using glass and moats rather than bars to offer unobstructed views of exotic species in lush, realistic environments.Beyond the usual favorites, Zoorasia is famous for being the first zoo in Japan to house the rare okapi, a 'forest giraffe' with zebra-like stripes. The park is massive—nearly 53 hectares—so wear comfortable walking shoes. To save time, hop on the 'Zoorasia Bus' which shuttles you between the far-flung North and South gates. For a unique perspective, visit the African Savanna zone, where cheetahs, zebras, and giraffes coexist in a shared habitat, mimicking the wild. If you’re visiting in August, look out for 'Night Zoorasia,' where the park stays open late, allowing you to witness the mysterious behavior of nocturnal animals under the stars. For families, the 'Chikyu-no-Hiroba' (Earth Plaza) features a giant playground perfect for letting kids burn off energy between animal sightings. It’s a full-day commitment compared to the smaller Nogeyama Zoo nearby, but the immersive 'travel around the world' theme makes it a superior choice for nature lovers seeking a world-class wildlife experience.View on Traveldoko
HyogoKobe Animal KingdomFrequently ranked as Japan's top-rated zoo by TripAdvisor users for its immersive, barrier-free design.Step into a lush greenhouse where exotic birds fly overhead and lemurs roam beside you. This park focuses on close encounters, allowing you to feed capybaras or watch majestic raptors dive just inches from your head during world-class flight demonstrations.Beyond the popular capybara petting area, the park is divided into indoor and outdoor zones, making it a reliable choice for rainy days. The Inside Forest feels like a genuine jungle trek where sloths hang lazily above the paths. Don't miss the Big Bill area, home to the enigmatic shoebill, a prehistoric-looking bird known for its motionless stare. For a unique experience, head to the Aqua Valley to see sleek fur seals, or visit the Manul Village to see the fluffy, grumpy-faced Pallas's cats. Pro tip: Arrive early for the Wings bird performance at the Lily Pond; the sight of hawks and owls gliding over the water with the skyline in the background is unforgettable. Unlike traditional urban zoos with heavy iron bars, the emphasis here is on shared space, creating a more intimate connection between humans and nature. If you are looking for more than just a walk-past viewing, this is arguably the most interactive wildlife experience in the Kansai region. It is easily accessible via the Port Liner monorail from central Sannomiya.View on Traveldoko
AichiHigashiyama Zoo and Botanical GardensJapan’s second most-visited zoo, home to over 500 species and the world-famous "handsome" gorilla.Spanning over 60 hectares, this sprawling complex houses the largest number of species in Japan. Beyond the animal enclosures, visitors can explore a peaceful Japanese garden, ride vintage attractions in the amusement park, or ascend the 80-meter observation tower for panoramic views of the Nagoya skyline. For history buffs, the 1937 conservatory is a must-see; as Japan's oldest large-scale greenhouse, it is designated as an Important Cultural Property for its elegant 'Crystal Palace' architecture. The park also holds a poignant legacy, having famously protected its elephants during WWII when many other Japanese zoos could not, a story now immortalized in local literature. A hidden gem is the 'World Medaka Hall,' which showcases Nagoya’s history as a center for killifish research with rare species from across the globe. Compared to Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo, Higashiyama offers significantly more space and a rugged, hilly terrain that feels like a nature hike. Pro tip: avoid the main gate crowds by starting at the botanical garden entrance, which leads you through serene forest paths toward the animal zones. In autumn, the garden stays open late for stunning maple leaf illuminations, offering a romantic atmosphere that contrasts with the energetic daytime crowds. Expect to walk a lot, so wear comfortable shoes to navigate the elevation changes between the zoo and the botanical slopes.View on Traveldoko
ShizuokaFuji Safari ParkJapan’s largest and most famous safari park, situated against the backdrop of Mount Fuji.Drive through expansive zones where lions, tigers, and bears roam freely in a natural environment. You can use your own car or board a "Jungle Bus" to feed large predators through wire mesh, providing a safe but thrilling encounter with the world's most powerful carnivores.Beyond the vehicle-based safari, the Walking Safari allows you to trek through forest trails along the perimeter of the enclosures for a unique ground-level perspective. For a different atmosphere altogether, visit during the Night Safari to witness nocturnal hunting behaviors rarely visible during the day. Families with young children should head to the Fureai Zone, where you can pet capybaras and red pandas or enjoy a pony ride. A key visitor hack: the iconic Jungle Buses are extremely popular and operate on a first-come, first-served basis; arrive as early as possible on weekends to secure a seat, as they often sell out by noon. Unlike standard city zoos, the park’s massive scale mimics a savanna, and on clear days, the sight of giraffes or cheetahs wandering with the snow-capped peak of Fuji towering behind them creates world-class photo opportunities found nowhere else. If you are driving a rental car, be aware that while rare, curious animals may occasionally touch the vehicle; taking the park's specialized bus is the safest way to protect your paint job while getting the best views.View on Traveldoko
ShizuokaIzu Shaboten ZooAn interactive animal park famous as the birthplace of Japan’s capybara hot spring baths.Beyond the mammals, this botanical sanctuary houses over 1,500 species of cacti and succulents inside uniquely shaped greenhouses. Visitors can walk among free-roaming wildlife, getting up close to curious squirrel monkeys, roaming peacocks, and kangaroos in an environment without traditional cages.Situated at the scenic foot of Mount Omuro, the facility opened in 1959 with a distinct mid-century architectural charm. One of the best-kept secrets here is the Animal Boat Tour, the first of its kind in Japan. You navigate a sprawling central pond guided by a captain, observing and feeding ring-tailed lemurs that inhabit the miniature islands. For a truly unique souvenir, head to the Cactus Hunting workshop. Armed with specialized chopsticks, you can personally harvest various small succulents straight from the soil and arrange them into a custom, one-of-a-kind potted masterpiece. Foodies shouldn't miss the themed restaurants offering whimsical items like cactus-flavored ice cream and green burgers resembling prickly plants. Savvy travelers often bundle their ticket with the nearby Omuro Chairlift for a full-day itinerary. To avoid the midday rush, arriving right at opening time guarantees quieter interactions at the feeding stations before the tour buses arrive from Tokyo.View on Traveldoko
MiyagiMiyagi Zao Fox VillageA unique mountain sanctuary where over 100 foxes of six different breeds roam completely free.Nestled in the Miyagi wilderness, this sprawling enclosure lets you walk directly through the animals' habitat. Visitors can purchase specialized snacks to toss from an elevated wooden pavilion, or queue up for the highly popular scheduled cuddling sessions to safely hold a sleeping kit.Beyond the main attraction, the facility is completely free of Echinococcus—a common canine parasite—thanks to strict artificial breeding and regular veterinary care, ensuring absolute safety. For the most spectacular visit, plan your trip during the snowy winter months. Cold weather triggers the growth of incredibly thick, luxurious winter coats, making the animals look their roundest and highly photogenic against the white landscape. Navigating the grounds requires following strict protocols: wearing rustling clothes, dangling keychains, or crouching down low can trigger hunting instincts. You must keep moving consistently and avoid dropping anything, including smartphones, as they might get snatched away. If you need a break from being on high alert, check out the separate petting zoo area near the entrance. Here, you will find entirely different residents, including miniature horses, goats, and exceptionally docile rabbits, offering a much more relaxed vibe away from the energetic predators.View on Traveldoko
TochigiNasu Animal KingdomJapan's premier interactive zoo, home to the country's most famous capybara hot springs and rare Pallas's cats.Divided into the indoor "Kingdom Town" and the expansive "Kingdom Farm," this park prioritizes immersive, fence-free habitats. Visitors can walk among red pandas, watch majestic birds of prey soar overhead, and meet exotic species like the Sand Cat and the prehistoric-looking Shoebill in a natural highland setting.Beyond the headlines, Nasu Animal Kingdom is a leader in conservation, spearheading breeding programs for the endangered Japanese rock ptarmigan. Its high-altitude location on the Nasu Highlands offers a refreshing escape from Japan's humid summers, while winter transforms the park into a snowy wonderland where capybaras soak in yuzu-filled baths. For the best experience, hop on the "Wan Wan Bus" or the tractor-drawn shuttles to reach the Farm area, where sheepdog trials showcase rural skills against the backdrop of the Kanto mountains. A hidden gem is the "Wetland" area, where you can walk through a lush indoor swamp and see shoebills standing motionless just inches away. If you're looking for unique souvenirs, the park’s original Pallas's cat merchandise is highly sought after. Be sure to try the "Yamaneko Rice" at the cafeteria—a dish that supports Tsushima leopard cat protection. Pro tip: Arrive 20 minutes early for the "Broad" bird show; the sight of eagles and owls gliding across the valley is an unforgettable spectacle that captures the true spirit of the highlands.View on Traveldoko
